I was browsing Kickstarter yesterday and I came across a documentary film that is in production by On Look Films called “Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo“.

A diverse, ambitious group of film, design and art professionals have come together because of their dedication to cultural issues, to produce a documentary on the Athan in Cairo. They hope to capture a 1400 year old tradition, the Adhan given by muezzins, before the Egyptian government implements the Tawheed Al Adhan which will unify the broadcast of the Adhan from a single station. The team at On Look Films needs as much help as possible to tell this story. They are currently sponsored by The Hartley Film Foundation and supported by National Geographic’s All Roads Film Project. To learn more about the History of the Adhan in Cairo and to hear audio footage of the Adhan given in Cairo check out the following link.
Here’s an excerpt from the Project Summary:
“Each day in Cairo, muezzins cry out the adhan from their mosques, calling believers to each of the five daily prayers from the city’s 4,000-plus mosques. The muezzins and their distinctive calls have never been recorded on film, nor archived for historical study. In early 2010, the Egyptian government will implement the Tawheed Al Adhan, or Adhan Unification Project, a plan to systemize the adhan by broadcasting the voice of a single muezzin from a state radio station to each of the capital’s mosques via wireless receivers, displacing more than 10,000 men who currently recite the adhan in Cairo.”
