Since this past Friday, December 16th, thousands of individuals around the world have followed the latest developments and coverage on the tense case of Aisha Khan’s disappearance. The 19-year-old college student went missing after leaving a frantic voicemail on her sister’s phone. Aisha’s belongings were all found at the picnic table where she was last seen studying. In a case that would be a nightmare for any parent, the latest news coverage depicts Aisha’s father weeping in front of a crowd of reporters as he expresses his distress over his missing daughter.
Despite showing great pain over their missing family member, Aisha’s family has utilized the world of social media to spread the message of her disappearance, with daily posts on an official Facebook page created for this cause and constant updates on their Twitter account. The social media message has grown so large that even well known celebrities, such as Channing Tatum, have joined in on Twitter by posting a quick message. Her family has successfully made headline news almost every day. The Internet world has shown tremendous support for the family and this cause. Each post on Facebook gets well over one hundred “likes” and “comments” of encouragement. The family is also relying off more traditional forms of spreading the word, such as fliers. However, it is the overwhelming response on the social media accounts that has created a sense of community online. Over 18,000 supporters have joined the cause to help find Aisha, and have also served as a sense of support for her family in these difficult times. Endless prayers and encouraging words pour in daily online.
Much of Aisha’s story still remains a mystery, as many individuals work both online and offline to find her. While we all hope for the best for Aisha and her family, simply hoping is not enough. We encourage all individuals to utilize the power of social media, which was effective in aiding revolutions in the middle east, to find this missing girl. In today’s world, a simple comment can go very far.
