If you take event planning and power it with a diverse team, spread over the East Coast, that is passionate about their faith and culture, what you get is Mehfil Events. Established this past March, Mehfil Events is an event management company like no other. We had an exclusive interview with their team to bring you the inside scoop of how they got started, what inspires them and why you shouldn’t miss their premier event happening this weekend, Anarkali Bazaar!
1. Tell us a little bit about each person on the team.
The Mehfil Events team is a high-energy group dedicated to creating the best social experience for its clients. Although the team members come from a variety of different backgrounds, they each hold a common passion for promoting the rich cultural traditions of the Muslim world.
The team consists of young, recent college graduates. Although majority of the team correspondence takes place online, given that the members are heavily invested in the social media generation, weekly meetings are held to discuss the latest developments.
Each member of the team holds a specific talent or niche that creates a versatile and unique bunch. The team varies from members that have worked at various top PR and marketing firms in the region, to more artistic members that have a particular skill for photography and photo editing, to even more members that have a love for numbers and have worked for top financial firms.
When not working on the various projects undertaken by Mehfil Events, which is rare, the team likes to spend time together visiting new restaurants, watching movies, and traveling.
The Mehfil Events group is highly dedicated to serving the needs of others and takes as a very important part of the their business the idea of charity. A portion of all the profits made by Mehfil Events at any of their events or projects is donated to a specific charity that the team has voted on.
2. What inspired you guys to start Mehfil Events?
The main inspiration behind Mehfil Events was the desire to showcase the Muslim world as much more than the depressing images in the media. The Mehfil Events team recognized the fascinating history of music, literature, and food among many other aspects of these countries. The company was started in an effort to reveal this rich past, that Muslims in America often feel the masses are unaware of.
In addition, the team understood the needs of Muslim Americans wanting to reconnect with their cultures. Whether it is through the physical atmosphere of a bazaar, or more symbolic methods of reconnecting, such as attending a keynote speech addressing the concerns of a certain country, the team members want to make these opportunities more accessible.
Mehfil events was created in an attempt to pursue these two major goals.
3. How did you get started?
The founding of Mehfil Events was actually not an epiphany type beginning, but more of a gradual process that started at a very young age. The team members all attest that at a very young ages they realized the immense importance that their parents places on reconnecting with their culture overseas. This was reflected in endless childhood memories of visiting our mother countries on a regular basis, upholding the traditional language within our household, staying up to date on the latest news developments of our countries, among many other activities that have become the norm of our daily life. It became embedded in each of us that even while living in a country that is not of ones heritage, a person should always strive to acknowledge their roots.
Although these thoughts were with us from a very early age, the planning for Mehfil Events began roughly a year ago. We began by creating a website to organize our thoughts -www.mehfilevents.com - and brainstorming different ideas of what events we could put together.
4. If you were given the chance to talk to youth about how your faith inspires your work. What message would you share?
At Mehfil Events, we strive to stick to the principles of our faith in any action we take. Often, in business decisions, the more profitable move may not always carry the greatest moral weight. Values such as honesty and fairness are often overshadowed by profitability and marketing tactics in many companies. One message that is essential to the character of a person and company as a whole is that your honesty for today will pay off tomorrow. It may not be in monetary value, but through an honest business connection, or even avoiding a negative effect of the dishonest action – you will somehow be rewarded for your decisions.
5. We’ve heard that you guys have an event coming up. Can you tell us about the event and maybe even give us an exclusive inside scoop of what guests should be be sure to check out?
Mehfil Events is hosting an Anarkali Bazaar on October 29th in Rockville, MD. The bazaar will be showcasing the latest middle-eastern fashion designers on a local and international level. There will also be top vendors in the event photography, jewelry/accessories, and beauty field, among many other categories.
Here is our latest flyer for the event:
Our featured vendor for this event is Royal Gemz. This particular vendor will be displaying for sale top designers such as Karma, Junaid Jamshed, FNK Asia, and Saira Rizwan. This is an excellent opportunity for women in the U.S. to witness the artistic expertise of top designers.
In addition, we have recently signed on as a food vendor a business that holds a personal connection to us. Many of the individuals on the Mehfil Events team attended the University of Maryland. Pizza Roma’s is a sort of a second home to us. We are proud to announce them as our food vendor at this event.
