Sudanese to Ferraris

Yup, you heard it right–it’s a Muslim, a female, and the first one ever to becoming an F1driver. Yassmin Abdel-Magied is out to turn her dreams into a reality, despite the people that only thought it was all a phase. Moving to Australia from Sudan when she was only a toddler,  Abdel-Magied attended an Islamic School through the early years of her life. But she has been all about breaking stereotypes, not making them. While in high school, she made the switch from her Islamic school to a Catholic school and became the first ever person to wear a headscarf there. Nineteen years old right now, Yassmin Abdel-Magied is starting her final year at the University of Queensland, soon to be graduating with a mechanical engineering degree.

This woman has gone up towards the mountain tops and is still climbing. She says she has had a passion for fast cars, full of muscle, when she saw a movie about them some few years ago; “I’ll pop up some random quote about cars, and people are like, ‘Hang on, she knows what she’s talking about’.” Setting a record for something has never been easy, especially with the limitations that we feel are being enclosed around us. It’s refreshing to see one of our own so ready to face the world, with the fastest engine running and ready to blare.

Who knows, maybe we’ll see her car on the next, newest game of Need for Speed? Now, that would be pretty sweet! Abdel-Magied aims on building her own muscle car one day and hitting the tracks. May the fast track await her and the force be with her.

More on this agile and nimble driver can be found at The Age.
